ENVIRONMENT STATISTICS 2025

Climate change continued to affect the country in 2024, resulting in various environmental impacts and an increase in disaster events such as floods, storms, landslides and fires. The total number of minor disaster events in 2024 increased to 228, compared to 170 events recorded in the previous year. Among the states that recorded the highest number of disaster incidents were Terengganu and Perak, reporting 28 incidents respectively, followed by Pahang and Selangor with 24 incidents. Floods remained the predominant disaster, accounting for 218 cases or 95.6 per cent of all disaster events in Malaysia. In line with this increase, the number of Temporary Evacuation Centres also rose to 1,520 (2023: 1,218). Meanwhile, the total number of disaster victims affected by floods, storms, landslides and fires increased by 28.8 per cent to 259,841 persons, compared to 201,712 persons in 2023.

However, the number of dengue fever cases recorded in 2024 showed a decline. Dengue fever cases in Malaysia decreased by 0.6 per cent to 122,423 cases in 2024 compared to 123,133 cases in 2023. Among the states that recorded a decline in dengue cases were Penang, which decreased to 4,370 cases (2023: 7,346 cases), followed by W.P Kuala Lumpur (including W.P Putrajaya), which recorded 11,133 cases and Kedah (4,452 cases). Additionally, the number of malaria cases in all states declined to 2,384 cases, compared to 3,629 cases in the previous year. Among the states that recorded a reduction in malaria cases were Sabah (1,254 cases), Sarawak (599 cases) and Kelantan (124 cases).

Furthermore, air quality in 2024 showed that the number of days with moderate air quality readings recorded at 65 stations ranged from 56 to 364 days. There were also stations that recorded unhealthy air quality status in 2024. These stations were Bukit Rambai, Melaka (35 days), Tanjung Malim, Perak (22 days), as well as Rompin, Pahang and Kimanis, Sabah each recording 18 days respectively.
